MONASTERY CHURCH OF THE VIRGINITY OF THE VIRGIN MARY IN ŽELIV

After a major fire in 1712, the abbot of the Želiv monastery commissioned the architect Santini to design the reconstruction of the monastery church. His task was to complete the new part and connect it to the repaired Gothic chancel.

The spatial concept of the interior is complicated, being divided into three naves separated by hanging arches.

In 1950 the monastery was closed down by the communists and an internment camp for priests and monks was established there. Between 1957 and 1992 it was a psychiatric hospital. In 1991, the monastery was returned to the Premonstratensians, who restored the monastic life and now manage the property.
