CHATEAU IN ŽĎÁR NAD SÁZAVOU

The historic centre of Žďár nad Sázavou is located in the present-day château complex, on the site of the former Cistercian monastery. The monastery reached its heyday in the first half of the 18th century under the administration of Abbot Václav Vejmluva, when an extensive reconstruction in Baroque style took place. It was implemented by the brilliant architect J. B. Santini.

The château grounds are a lively and creative place that offer visitors an all-day experience - a guided tour in the footsteps of Santini, a permanent exhibition of Baroque art from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, nature trails around the castle ponds, a café, a gift shop and a children's play area. It includes the Museum of the New Generation, a unique experiential exhibition with interactive elements. The ground floor of the exhibition is dedicated to the Cistercian Order and the early medieval period, while the first floor offers a glimpse into the beautiful and colourful world of the Baroque.
